The Bill of Rights Day Committee

Ideas for Promoting
Bill of Rights Day

1. Write a letter to the editor.

  • Larger circulation papers are better, but
  • Smaller ones are more likely to print your letter
  • Click here to find your local media outlets

2. Call (or write to) a talk show.

3. Write to local elected officials.

  • Send information & a sample resolution
  • Urge that he/she offer a resolution for BORD
  • Click here to find contact information for state and local officials

4. Offer the BORD concept at local civic or social club.

  • Call the secretary of the organization to put BORD on agenda of "new business"
  • Conduct a brief discussion at the meeting; show sample resolution
  • Use Bill of Rights Day Committee materials as handouts at themeeting, if desired

5. Contact a friendly member of your local school board.

  • Send information & sample resolution
  • Urge the school board to pass resolution
  • Urge the school board to direct schools to study Bill of Rights
  • Propose a BORD writing competition for students (offer a prize)
  • Prize idea: cash
  • Prize idea: free product or service from your business
  • Prize idea: recognition and a certificate from your civic org
  • Combination of the above—or ... be creative!

6. Sponsor a BORD writing or speech competition in your child's public or private school or homeschooling group (contact school or group directly—see item 5 above for ideas).

7. Contact a "local access" cable channel programmer who is putting on educational or current affairs shows.

  • Ask if BORD would fit into goals of the program
  • Offer to talk about Bill of Rights Day on the program, or
  • Suggest an interview with someone from the Bill of Rights Day Committee

8. Contact your local public library.

  • Suggest that they put out a Bill of Rights display during the week leading up to Dec. 15
  • Ask them to allow you to place a BORD poster on display during same week
  • Put on your own BORD discussion in the library's meeting room
9. In your workplace, cubicle, workbench, store window, etc. (if permitted):
  • Post a BORD poster
  • Wear a BORD button
  • Wear a BORD sweater or T-shirt

10. Post messages on all of the computer bulletin boards, newsgroups and listservs where it would be appropriate.

11. Whenever asked, answer that your motivation is to:

  • Educate Americans about the Bill of Rights
  • Preserve ALL of the Bill of Rights for ALL citizens
